Mechanicum - History and Origins

The Mechanicum, also known as the Adeptus Mechanicus in the later days of Warhammer 40,000, hails from the planet Mars, a key centre of technology, engineering and research for the Imperium of Man. During the Horus Heresy and before, Mars became the centre of worship of the Omnissiah, the machine god worshipped by all members of the Mechanicum. Mars and its industrial forges (the Martian Forges) were responsible for the production of most of the Imperium's advanced technology, from weapons to giant war machines such as the Titans.

The Mechanicum was initially an independent organisation from the Imperium, but formed an alliance with the Emperor as Mankind began to rebuild its galactic empire. In exchange for technological support and mass production, the Mechanicum was granted a degree of autonomy and control over its forges, scattered across the galaxy.

During the Horus Heresy, Mars became a battleground of internal conflict as the Mechanicum factions split into loyalists who supported the Emperor and renegades who allied themselves with Horus. The latter were known as the Dark Mechanicum, using forbidden technologies and manipulating the daemonic forces of Chaos.
