What Are Modeling Stones & Rocks?
Modeling stones and rocks are a fundamental material for building realistic terrain on dioramas, vignettes, and miniature bases. They offer a simple way to diversify your scenery, adding depth and texture. Whether you're creating a rocky slope, a battlefield strewn with rubble, or a path through a dense forest, appropriately chosen stones and aggregates are key to realistically recreating nature. They give every model character and make it more visually compelling.
Types and Applications of Stones in Modeling
Our range includes stones of various sizes, shapes, and materials. Fine aggregate is perfect for creating gravel roads, representing rubble, or as a ground cover on larger surfaces. Medium-sized rocks and rock fragments are useful for building small walls, slopes, or as standalone landscape features. Larger boulders can act as a focal point in your composition or add variety to flat terrain. We offer both natural, selected stones and lightweight alternatives made from cork, pumice, or resin casts, which don't add significant weight to your model and are easy to work with.
How to Work with Stones on a Model?
Applying stones is straightforward. They are typically glued down with PVA glue or cyanoacrylate adhesives (super glue), depending on the size of the stone and the surface. To achieve a natural look, it's best to mix various sizes and avoid symmetrical or regular patterns. Once the glue is dry, the stones can be painted with acrylics to blend them with the rest of your scene. Using washes (thinned paints) will accentuate recesses and shadows, while drybrushing will bring out the texture and edges, giving the entire piece a realistic appearance.
