What is the Mr.Color GX series?

Mr.Color GX is a special line of high-quality, lacquer-type hobby paints from the Japanese company GSI Creos, more widely known as Gunze. These are premium products designed for modelers who demand the highest quality pigments, excellent coverage, and an exceptionally durable finish. Thanks to their solvent-based formula, these paints allow for very smooth, thin layers of color, which is crucial for painting fine details on plastic models. The GX series is an evolution of the popular Mr.Color line, offering enhanced properties, including more vibrant colors and greater resistance to mechanical damage once fully cured.

Properties and Application of Mr.Color GX Paints

The main advantage of the GX series paints is their excellent pigmentation, which ensures great coverage with just a single thin coat. These paints dry very quickly, significantly speeding up the modeling process. They are primarily designed for application with an airbrush. To achieve the proper consistency, they must be diluted with dedicated thinners like Mr. Color Thinner or Mr. Leveling Thinner, which also enhances the paint's self-leveling properties to create a perfectly smooth surface. While brush painting is possible for small details, their rapid drying time can make it challenging to achieve an even finish on larger areas. The cured paint coat is hard and resilient, making it a great base for subsequent steps like applying decals or weathering effects.

The Mr.Color GX color range includes basic colors as well as specialty paints, such as clear coats in various finishes (e.g., GX100 Super Clear III) and metallics. Due to their chemical composition, these paints have a strong odor, making good room ventilation essential during use. Using a spray booth and wearing a respirator mask with organic vapor filters is recommended to protect the respiratory system.
