Application
The Tamiya XF-57 Buff paint is intended for painting plastic models—suitable for both brush and airbrush application. Tamiya colors are widely used according to the X- and XF- designations in the instructions of models by other manufacturers, making it easier to select the right shade for scale and type of vehicles, aircraft, or figures.
Surface Preparation
Before painting, thoroughly clean and degrease the model surface. To improve adhesion and durability of the coating, it is recommended to apply a primer, such as Tamiya Surface Primer, especially when painting directly on plastic.
Brush Painting
Small surfaces can be painted without thinning.
For larger areas, it is recommended to lightly dilute the paint with water.
The paint should be thinned with an equal ratio of Tamiya X-20A thinner.
This ensures proper flow through the nozzle and reduces the risk of clogging.
Use protective breathing equipment, such as a mask, and work in a ventilated area or spray booth.
Alternatively, the paint can be thinned with stronger solvents like Lacquer Thinner or Mr. Levelling Thinner for better flow, though this may increase fumes and requires caution.
Color Compatibility and Mixing
Tamiya acrylic paints are compatible with other paints from the X and XF series, allowing for mixing to achieve custom shades. For instance, painting instructions often specify mixing colors (e.g., XF-1:2 + XF-4:1), which means blending two shades in specific proportions to produce the desired color for the model.
