About the F4U-2 Corsair
The F4U-2 Corsair is a modified version of the famous Vought F4U Corsair carrier-based fighter, used by American forces during World War II. The development of the F4U-2 variant began in 1943 in response to the demand for aircraft capable of night operations.
Equipment: The aircraft was equipped with the AN/APS-4 radar, which allowed for the detection and interception of enemy aircraft in conditions of limited visibility. This was crucial for the defense of naval convoys and bases.
Flight Characteristics: The F4U-2 retained the excellent flight characteristics of the original Corsair, including a top speed of approximately 640 km/h and high maneuverability.
Armament: Standard armament included six .50 caliber machine guns. The aircraft could also carry bombs or rockets, which increased its combat versatility.
Operational Role: Despite the relatively small number of units produced, F4U-2s played an important role in air operations in the Pacific, effectively combating Japanese air forces at night.
