Application and Painting Tips
Surface Preparation
For optimal results with Tamiya LP-37 lacquer, surfaces to be painted should be clean and degreased. We recommend using an appropriate model primer, such as Tamiya Surface Primer spray. Applying the paint directly to plastic may result in weaker adhesion of the coating and a poorer final effect, especially when brush painting.
Airbrushing
Tamiya LP cellulose lacquers are excellent for airbrushing. They should be thinned at a 1:1 ratio with the dedicated Tamiya Lacquer Thinner. This combination ensures comfortable painting due to good paint flow through the airbrush nozzle, minimizing the risk of clogging, which can be an issue with water-based paints.
Optionally, for an even smoother surface and extended leveling time for the paint, you can use a retarder thinner: Tamiya Lacquer Thinner Retarder Type.
Due to the content of strong solvents, when airbrushing with Tamiya LP paints, it is recommended to use respiratory protection, such as a mask, ideally in conjunction with a spray booth equipped with fume extraction.
Brush Painting
Lacquer paints, such as Tamiya LP-37, are not recommended for brush painting, with the exception of small touch-ups or very small areas. The strong solvents contained in the paint's composition can damage previously applied paint layers and create unsightly brush strokes.
