Application and Preparation
Before applying Tamiya LP-42 lacquer, surfaces to be painted should be thoroughly cleaned and degreased. For optimal paint adhesion and the highest quality coating, it is recommended to use an appropriate primer. Applying the paint directly to plastic may result in weaker adhesion and a less aesthetic final effect. For quick and effective priming, Tamiya Surface Primer spray primer is recommended.
Airbrushing
Tamiya LP lacquer paints perform exceptionally well when airbrushed. For optimal results, the lacquer should be thinned 1:1 with the dedicated Lacquer Thinner. This mixture ensures excellent paint flow through the airbrush nozzle, minimizing the risk of clogging, which is typical for some water-based paints.
Optionally, for an even smoother finish and longer leveling time, you can use Lacquer Thinner Retarder Type, which contains a retarder. Due to the strong solvent content, when airbrushing with Tamiya LP paints, it is recommended to use appropriate respiratory protection (e.g., a mask) and work in a well-ventilated area, preferably with a spray booth with fume extraction.
Brush Painting
Tamiya LP-42 lacquer, like other cellulose-based paints from the LP series, is not recommended for brush painting, with the exception of very small details or minor touch-ups. The strong solvent content in the paint's composition can lead to damage to previously applied lacquer layers and the creation of unsightly brush strokes.
