Preparation for Painting
Surface Preparation
For optimal results, surfaces to be painted should be thoroughly clean and degreased. It is recommended to use a primer before applying the lacquer, as direct application to plastic may result in weaker adhesion and a poorer final effect, especially when brush painting.
Tamiya LP lacquer paints are ideally suited for airbrush application. To ensure a smooth flow of paint through the nozzle and prevent clogging, the lacquer should be thinned in a 1:1 ratio with a dedicated thinner. This combination ensures comfortable painting and even coverage.
When airbrushing with Tamiya LP lacquers, due to the presence of strong solvents, it is recommended to use appropriate respiratory protection, such as a mask, preferably in conjunction with a spray booth equipped with fume extraction.
Brush Painting
LP-45 RACING BLUE lacquer is not recommended for brush painting, with the exception of very small touch-ups or painting small, precise details. The paint's composition, containing strong solvents, can cause damage to previously applied coatings and create undesirable brush marks.
Recommended Thinners
For optimal thinning of Tamiya LP-45 lacquer and achieving the best painting results, the following thinners are recommended:
Tamiya Lacquer Thinner: A standard thinner providing fast drying and excellent application properties.
Tamiya Lacquer Thinner Retarder Type: A thinner with added retarder, which extends the paint's drying time. This allows for better leveling of the lacquer on the surface and an even smoother finish.
