Properties and Compatibility
Tamiya XF series "Flat" paints can be used with plastic models from all major manufacturers. Color codes starting with XF are standard in modeling, commonly appearing in painting instructions, even from other brands. These paints are suitable for use with both brushes and airbrushes.
Painting with a brush
It is recommended to prime the surface, e.g., with Tamiya Surface Primer, to improve adhesion and finish quality.
Small areas can be painted without thinning.
For larger surfaces, the paint can be lightly thinned with water.
The paint should be thinned at a 1:1 ratio with Tamiya X-20A for optimal flow and to prevent nozzle clogging.
Alternatively, stronger thinners such as Lacquer Thinner or Mr. Levelling Thinner can be used to improve paint flow, but caution is advised due to their stronger odor.
It's recommended to wear a mask and ensure good ventilation when airbrushing.
Surface Preparation
Before painting, the model should be clean, dry, and free of grease. Applying paint over a primer significantly improves adhesion and final appearance, especially when using a brush.
Color Mixing
Colors from the XF series can be mixed to achieve specific shades. For example, diluting paints in proportions given in the instructions, such as XF-1 (Black) and XF-4 (Yellow) in a 2:1 ratio, allows for color adjustments to meet the model's requirements.
