Tamiya XF-51 Acrylic Paint in Khaki Drab is a high-quality model enamel with a 10 ml capacity designed for precise painting of plastic models. The paint is alcohol-based, ensuring quick drying and good adhesion to plastic, metal, and resin surfaces.
XF-51 Khaki Drab is widely used for painting military plastic models, especially tanks, tracked vehicles, and soldiers. This color closely resembles the historical shade of olive greenish brown commonly used in military camouflage.
Compatibility and Mixing
Tamiya paints with the XF- code series are popular among modelers for their versatility and compatibility with instructions from most model kit manufacturers. It is possible to mix different colors to achieve specific shades. For example, a mix of XF-1:2 and XF-4:1 indicates 2 parts of XF-1 paint to 1 part of XF-4 paint.
Preparing for Painting
The model should be thoroughly cleaned and degreased before applying paint.
Applying a primer is recommended, especially when brush painting, such as Tamiya Surface Primer.
Painting Techniques
Brush Painting
Surface priming is recommended for brush painting. For small areas, the paint can be applied without thinning. To achieve a smoother coat on larger surfaces, it is advised to dilute the paint slightly with water. You can also add a small amount of retarder, such as Tamiya Acrylic Paint Retarder, to extend drying time.
Airbrush Painting
The paints are excellent for airbrushing when diluted 1:1 with Tamiya X-20A thinner. This dilution provides optimal flow and minimizes clogging risks. When airbrushing, it is recommended to wear a respiratory mask and use an extraction system to vent fumes. Alternatively, stronger thinners like Lacquer Thinner or Mr. Levelling Thinner can be used to improve paint flow, though they have a stronger odor.
