Application and compatibility
Tamiya XF-49 Khaki enamel paint is intended for painting plastic models and is frequently used in military modeling and other fields requiring a Khaki shade. The Tamiya paint designations (X- or XF-) are used by both Tamiya and many other model manufacturers, making it easy to select colors according to the instructions of the models.
If an exact shade is needed, Tamiya paints can be mixed— for example, according to mixing ratios provided in instructions (e.g., XF-1:2 + XF-4:1).
Preparing the surface for painting
Before painting, surfaces should be cleaned and degreased. Applying a primer, such as Tamiya Surface Primer, is recommended to improve paint adhesion and coverage.
For oil enamels like Tamiya, primers are optional—they adhere well even to challenging surfaces such as metal and wood.
Painting instructions
Painting with a brush
The paint can be applied directly from the bottle to small surfaces. For larger areas, it is recommended to lightly dilute with Tamiya X-20 thinner (blue cap).
This enamel paint has a fluid consistency and good coverage, facilitating precise detail painting. To clean brushes and remove excess paint, use the same thinner.
Airbrushing
For airbrushing, dilute the paint in a 1:1 ratio with Tamiya X-20 thinner. This prepared mixture provides proper fluidity and even coverage during spraying.
When airbrushing, it is recommended to wear respiratory protection (mask) and work in a vented spray booth. Cleaning the airbrush should be done with X-20 thinner.
