HMS Sheffield (D80) was the lead ship of the British Type 42 destroyer class, entering service in 1975. Designed as a crucial component of air defense, the destroyer was equipped with Sea Dart missiles, protecting strategic units, including aircraft carriers. Its role became particularly dramatic during the Falklands War in 1982.
On May 4, 1982, while operating as part of Task Force 317, Sheffield was hit by an Argentine Exocet AM39 anti-ship missile. Although the missile did not detonate conventionally, it caused an extensive fire and damage to the firefighting systems, leading to the loss of the ship a few days later. This tragic event, which resulted in the deaths of 20 sailors, was the first loss of a British warship since World War II and became a symbol of the dawn of a new era of missile threats at sea, highlighting the necessity for the development of new defense systems and naval doctrines.
