Application and preparation
Tamiya X-12 Gold Leaf paint is designed for precise painting of plastic model kits. Thanks to its low viscosity and good adhesion, it is suitable for detailed work as well as larger surface areas. Before painting, it is recommended to thoroughly clean and degrease the surface and apply a primer to improve durability and finish. For quick priming, Tamiya Surface Primer spray is recommended.
Brush painting
Small surfaces can be painted directly with the paint without thinning. For larger areas, slight dilution with water is advisable. To extend drying time and improve flow, you can add Tamiya Acrylic Paint Retarder.
Airbrush painting
When using an airbrush, thin the paint in a 1:1 ratio with Tamiya X-20A thinner. This ratio ensures optimal flow through the airbrush nozzle and minimizes clogging risks while maintaining a moderate odor. For better results and comfort, it is recommended to wear masks and ensure proper ventilation. Alternatively, more potent thinners like Lacquer Thinner or Mr. Leveling Thinner can be used for thinning, which improve paint flow but have a more intense smell.
For best results, the paint can also be thinned with stronger solvents, such as Lacquer Thinner or Mr. Levelling Thinner, which enhance flow but have a more pronounced odor.
Color mixing and compatibility
Yamaha acrylic paints marked with codes starting with X- and XF- are standard in modeling and are often used in the instructions of various model manufacturers. It is possible to mix paints to achieve the desired shade. For example, a mixture described as XF-1:2 + XF-4:1 indicates a ratio of 2 parts XF-1 to 1 part XF-4.
