Key product features
Type of paint: alcohol-based acrylic
Volume: 10 ml
Color: Medium Grey (XF-20, compatible with Tamiya color codes)
XF-20 Medium Grey is widely used for painting plastic models and is utilized by Tamiya as well as other modeling brands that reference Tamiya color numbers (starting with X- and XF-). It can be used alone or mixed with other colors to achieve the correct shade matching the model’s documentation.
Preparing the surface for painting
Before applying paint, the model surfaces should be clean and thoroughly degreased.
It is recommended to use a primer, such as Tamiya Surface Primer, to enhance coating durability and improve finish quality.
Painting techniques
Brush painting
For brush painting, it is recommended to dilute the paint lightly with water for larger surfaces, while it can be used straight from the bottle on smaller details. For longer painting sessions, adding a Tamiya Acrylic Paint Retarder can extend the drying time, making application more comfortable.
Airbrush painting
Tamiya XF-20 is ideal for airbrushing when thinned 1:1 with Tamiya X-20A. This ratio ensures optimal flow, minimizes nozzle clogging, and provides even coverage. Alternatively, stronger thinners like Lacquer Thinner or Mr. Levelling Thinner can be used to improve flow, though they produce a stronger smell.
Range during airbrush use, it is recommended to wear respiratory protection and work in a well-ventilated spray booth or extraction setup.
